TikTok has been hit with accusations that it generated revenue from illegal videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children, claims put forward by people who previously and currently work at the company. These individuals assert that the firm disregarded internal notifications concerning this material. Reporting on the matter has come from NPR.
The allegations against the short-video service include claims that it profited from users paying to view content in which minors appear sexually, a situation that could amount to a financial crime. Staff members also identified a means by which users younger than 18 circumvented restrictions on adult content. Furthermore, these individuals found that such users could prevent guardians from monitoring their actions within the application.
Documents further indicate that the company chose not to perform surveys to determine the ages of its users. This decision was motivated by a concern that the collected data would need to be submitted to the Federal Trade Commission. Additionally, internal concerns were voiced regarding young users receiving material connected to suicide and self-harm, with allegations that the platform did not adequately address this issue.
According to the employees, senior leaders were informed of these problems, yet their actions were deemed insufficient. Companies operating social media services are legally obligated to report suspected child sexual abuse material and any suspicions concerning the unlawful acquisition of money through their platforms.
TikTok, which has a substantial number of teenage users, is among the most downloaded applications on the App Store. The company addressed the report by stating that the assertions are “clearly cherry-picked at the behest of trial lawyers and used to inaccurately rewrite our history and mislead the public about our commitment to youth safety and how our platform works.”
The accusations from workers describe a failure to act on reports concerning minors in sexual content and age verification methods. These workers state that company executives were aware of the issues but did not respond appropriately. The company’s response addresses the report directly while asserting a dedication to protecting young people on the platform.
There are no further details on actions that might be taken as a result of these allegations. The company maintains that its commitment to youth safety remains unchanged. This report is part of a larger conversation regarding content moderation and the safety of minors online.
